Eliot Stein is a writer and editor who thinks compelling storytelling makes the world hum. In an age when everything has seemingly been explored and explained, he seeks out stories that remind us how much there still is to discover and that the world can be a wondrous place.
His writing has appeared in The New York Times, WIRED, The Guardian, The Washington Post, National Geographic, Condé Nast Traveler, and elsewhere. He is currently the deputy editor at BBC Travel, where he writes a column called Custom Made that highlights the last living people who are preserving a distinct cultural wonder that exists nowhere else.
He's happiest in a treehouse, kayak, or holding his new son.
Custodians of Wonder: Ancient Customs, Profound Traditions, and the Last People Keeping Them Alive is forthcoming from St. Martin’s Press in December 2024.
